Franklin Township: Free Flu Shots for All this Saturday

10 November 2018, 05:10 | Randall Craig

Flu season generally begins in early winter or late autumn and can extend into the spring.

The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare reported Friday that the first flu-related death happened this week. Influenza is spread from person to person and comes with many nasty and sometimes lethal symptoms which include fevers, body aches, malaise, headaches, runny noses and sore throats. You can track of how much flu is in the community by visiting here. Some 70,000 people in the United States died from flu last season, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"Influenza can influence cardiovascular events especially in high-risk individuals, so we should not be complacent about vaccination", said Dr. Scott Solomon, the study's senior author and a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

"Getting the vaccine is a quick, simple procedure which is the best way people can protect themselves against the unpredictable flu virus and any more serious complications which could result". Flu shots were available to students, staff and faculty at a cost of $15 and supplies are limited. "Plus you are limited to what vaccine is offered: standard and high-dose and it is only 20-30 percent effective and yet some people still choose it".

Many misconceptions about the flu vaccine linger.

"I usually do the flu shot", Dr. Bhargava says. "While the flu is unpredictable, what is predictable is that getting your annual flu vaccine can prevent you from getting the flu, and from spreading it to family, friends, neighbors and co-workers". The flu vaccine is a safe and effective means of protecting yourself and your family.

"You may have a few days after you get your flu shot where you perhaps aren't feeling 100 percent", Han said. Washing your hands frequently, containing your coughs and sneezes when in public and avoiding crowds during flu peak season are all good suggestions.
