Motorists die as they flee California wildfires

When the sun rose Thursday over Paradise, Calif., the small town of 27,000 awoke to find the world looking largely as it always had.

In a statement, the Butte County Sheriff's Office said: "The preliminary investigation revealed that the victims were located in vehicles that were overcome by the Camp Fire".

Fanned by high winds and fueled by low humidity and dry vegetation, the fires spread rapidly Thursday and overnight into Friday.

The Camp fire swept through Paradise, California, on Thursday, with officials saying at least 1,000 structures were destroyed. A sooty squirrel scrambles up a blackened tree in a panic.

Using data from various government sources, spatial analytics company Esri has created two interactive maps to help people track the progression of the fires and stay up to date on traffic and smoke forecasts.

Paradise, located almost 145 kilometers north of Sacramento, was home to more than 26,000 residents, according to its website. "The town is devastated, everything is destroyed".

During all of this, VandenBerg had to take care of her baby alone.

They drove away but got eventually got caught in traffic. 'People started getting out of their vehicles and running'.

The video resembles nothing more than a terrifying escape from Hell.

In Chico, VandenBerg reunited with her husband. The buildings were seen in movies and television series such as "The Mentalist" and "Weeds".

The sheriff says they have taken 35 reports of missing people. The extent of the injuries and damage was not immediately known.

The town saw 6,700 homes and businesses ravaged by the fire, one of the most destructive in state history. Friday, officials said it had grown to 14,000 acres.

And on Friday, Newsom also declared a state of emergency for the raging fires also ravaging Ventura County near Los Angeles as well.

Mandatory evacuations were ordered for Malibu.

The massive blaze that hit Paradise spread north Friday, prompting officials to order the evacuation of Stirling City and Inskip, two communities north of Paradise along the Sierra Nevada foothills. "Make sure your stuff is packed and ready".

Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro tweeted that he had abandoned his vast "Bleak House" museum collection of fantasy and horror memorabilia, while singer Etheridge said she had moved into a hotel.

"This event was the worst-case scenario", he said.

"My heart's still with those suffering the loss of their children, their husband and their dad".

Flames consume a home as the Camp Fire tears through Paradise. "The smoke just seems surreal", she wrote. Last night it covered just 2,000 acres.

The Woolsey Fire jumped the 101 Freeway at Liberty Canyon Road and Chesebro Road. "I know three of my coaches lost their homes and I know whole neighborhoods burned". "We are still not out of the woods yet". Thousand Oaks is a 30-minute drive north of Malibu. "We have found a safe hotel ..."

Meanwhile firefighters operating bulldozers have been authorised to push cars off the road to clear a path and try to beat back the flames.

"We are by no means out of the woods as far as the danger posed by the fire", "The amount of uncontained fire line is very large".

The fire broke out on Thursday north west of Los Angeles and roared south, jumping the United States 101 freeway early on Friday and sweeping into the Santa Monica Mountains. (Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images) Flames from a wildfire burn a portion of Griffith Park in Los Angeles, Nov. 9, 2018.

Winds were expected to weaken Friday afternoon into Saturday.

Forecasters expect a break in the Santa Ana winds on Saturday and then a new round Sunday through Tuesday.
