Mr Macron has been a longstanding critic of Trump. Mr. Trump has railed against trade deals with the European Union and has criticized some EU nations, including France, for not spending enough to defense to sustain North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, the decades-old Western alliance formed as a bulwark to Moscow's aggression.
"We will not protect the Europeans unless we decide to have a true European army", he continued.
"While in Paris, President Buhari will also join other world leaders to commemorate the centenary anniversary of the Armistice signed on November 11, 1918 between the Allied Forces and Germany in the forest of Compiegne in France to end the First World War". Macron's office declined to comment on Trump's tweet.
Macron's comments came amid the launch of the European Intervention Initiative, a coalition of European militaries that supporters say would not conflict with the largely US -dominated North Atlantic Treaty Organisation alliance.
Trump and Macron struck up a warm relationship initially, particularly during the U.S. leader's first visit to Paris, but have repeatedly clashed since then over a growing list of issues, including Trump pulling America out of the 2015 Paris climate accord and the Iran nuclear deal.
Trump and Macron also have extensive differences over trade and USA sanctions on Iran. But the elimination of tariffs could have an acute impact on French companies including Renault SA and PSA Group, the maker of Peugeot and Citroen vehicles, who don't sell cars in the USA but would face increased competition in their home markets. Trump stared at the journalists but did not respond before entering the presidential limousine. That effort hasn't yet yielded results, and the Trump administration has warned that countries hosting a so-called "special goal vehicle" to subvert the sanctions could face penalties themselves. "Great world leaders", he said, are "driven by national interests". Early on, Macron tried to position himself as a sort of "Trump whisperer" and Trump returned the favor, hosting Macron at the first and only state dinner of his presidency. The pair are expected to meet during the G-20 meeting later this month in Argentina, and the White House has invited Putin to visit Washington. He will make pilgrimages to two American cemeteries, Belleau Wood two hours east of Paris on Saturday and Suresnes on the western outskirts of the capital on Sunday, where he will make formal remarks.
