"He didn't come home last night, and I don't want prayers; I don't want thoughts; I want gun control and I hope to God nobody else sends me any more prayers".

"The first thing I said was, 'Please don't drink and drive, ' " Coffman said. Colell, then 28, was the girls track coach and also disciplined the boys team. They entered the building at 11:25 p.m.

A number of survivors of that shooting, the worst in modern United States history, have said they were at the bar on Wednesday.

Authorities say Long, a former Marine combat veteran who had been stationed in Afghanistan, used a.45-caliber Glock handgun with an illegal, extra-capacity magazine in the shooting that left 12 dead. A Borderline bouncer said they were surely among the heroes. Armed with a knife in case an attacker came in, he hunkered down and waited with 40 other people for four hours.

An emotional Dean described Helus as a friend and colleague. "Ron was a hardworking, dedicated sheriff's sergeant". He gave his all.

Stricter, sensible gun laws are needed, of course, but will they be enough? Helus was a 29-year veteran of the department, with plans to retire in several years.

Sheriff Geoff Dean of Ventura County police said at least six off-duty officers were at the bar, which was hosting a country music night. "He was a lifetime learner, a trainer, a mentor, a leader". "That's a small piece of solace for the family knowing their father, their husband, ran into danger and saved lives". Thirteen people died, including a sheriff's deputy and the suspected shooter.

"He's just one of those guys that wouldn't hesitate in a situation".

A short time later, just before 10 a.m., he received the news he said would forever change his life. "I would make fun of him, because he would drag me there". "You can't go to a bar or nightclub?"

"To describe it as heroic", he trailed off for about a minute, as he stood about 300 feet from the bar.

"It's just not right", he said about the shooting.

In a separate interview, the father of Cody Coffman, one of the victims confirmed dead in the shooting, spoke of his grief.

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, local man Chandler Gunn, 23, said that numerous people who attended the bar's event had also survived last year's mass shooting at a country music festival in Las Vegas, which killed 58 people.

Twenty-seven-year-old Telemachus Orfanos, one of the victims slain late Wednesday when a gunman attacked a busy Southern California country bar, had survived the Las Vegas massacre little more than a year ago - and now, his grieving mother is demanding action from Washington.
