And a third report from the center found that those aged 65 or more years had the lowest rate of drug overdose deaths compared with other age groups.

The annual mortality report from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) highlights the disastrous impact of the social crisis on the American working class. Suicides and drug overdoses, what have been termed deaths of despair, have been identified as the driving forces behind the continuing decline in how long Americans are expected to live. Prior to 2015, USA life expectancy had not declined for several decades.

CDC Director Dr. Robert R. Redfield wrote in a statement that the trend is largely driven by drug overdose deaths and a 3.7 percent increase in the suicide rate.

Life expectancy in the United States continues to fall as more Americans commit suicide or die from drug overdoses in the longest decline in longevity since the First World War.

Overall life expectancy for Americans was 78.6 years in 2017, a drop of 0.1 year. Just 30 percent involved the category that includes the most commonly prescribed pain medications (the blue line), and some of those deaths also involved fentanyl or heroin (the yellow line), which was implicated in one-third of the opioid fatalities. From 2016 to 2017, the age-adjusted death rate for the entire population increased by 0.4 percent.

Still, the increase was not as big as the 21 percent leap in drug overdose death rate between 2015 and 2016.

Meanwhile, the use of overdose-preventing drugs like narcan is being actively objected to by police forces around the country, as many refuse to carry the opioid antidote.

For a long time, US life expectancy rates were increasing, rising a few months almost every year. Unless you've been living under a rock, you probably already know what it is: drugs.

The male life expectancy was 76.1 years, down a tenth of a year from 2016.

"Vermont took steps early on to implement a number of significant actions to enhance prevention, promote screening and early intervention, monitor prescribing, expand treatment and support recovery", Levine said. Earlier CDC reports have noted increasing rates of suicide by gun. Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States for the tenth year in a row.

Suicide was ranked as the 10th-leading cause of death for Americans of all ages and the second-leading leading cause of death for people between ages 10 and 34, the data said.

There is no solution to the continued decline in life expectancy forthcoming from the ruling class.

Separately, suicide rates have increased by about 2 percent per year between 2006 and 2017, according to the CDC's data.

The suicide rate in 2017 for females aged 75 and over (4.0) was significantly lower than the rate in 1999 (4.5).

A variety of factors determine suicide rates, but one that may help explain its greater prevalence in rural areas is access to guns, said Keith Humphreys, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University.

And while efforts to combat the opioid epidemic "are starting to stem the tide", she says, "we need to be doing much more".
