Google's chat plans: Kill Allo, upgrade Duo and invest in Messages

06 December 2018, 07:44 | Cameron Gross

Well, this news is not entirely surprising as the fact that Google had already stopped the investment for Allo since April 2016.

In a turn of events pretty much everyone outside of Google saw coming, the search giant is apparently poised to wind down its Google Allo messaging app, with an announcement coming "soon".

Hopefully once all this is over we'll have some sort of instant messaging system that makes sense rather than the plethora of options Google now makes us all suffer.

As for Hangouts, the other unclear entry in Google's family of messaging apps, Google previously announced that it would "evolve" Hangouts into separate Hangout Chats and Hangouts Meet experiences for businesses. However, the main reason Allo's closure is noteworthy in my mind is that it was the first use case for the Google Assistant. With the eventual rollout of RCS messaging for Android devices, Google is likely putting all of its resources into Messages, setting it as the primary messaging app from the company. Messages is getting or has gotten most of Allo's best features and will continue to see major development. However, the company has confirmed the chat app will continue to work till March 2019 and the users will be able to export their chat conversation history till the said time-frame.

We heard reports of Google's plans of shutting down Allo, and the company has now confirmed this. All users will be moved to the Slack-like Hangouts Chat and video conferencing app Hangouts Meet-it did the same thing with G Suite users-but there's no word on when this will happen.

Meanwhile, Google will focus on Messages. Weve been working closely with the mobile industry to upgrade SMS so that people around the world can more easily enjoy group chats, share high-res photos, and get read receipts on any Android device. "By refocusing on Messages and Duo for consumers and Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet for team collaboration, we're focused on delivering a simpler and more unified communications experience for all of you", writes Klainer.
