Watch This SpaceX Rocket Splash Down During Failed Landing Attempt

SpaceX suffers ‘bummer’ landing, first-stage booster crashes into ocean

Falcon 9

"Grid fin hydraulic pump stalled, so Falcon landed just out to sea".

Koenigsmann also revealed at the briefing that the rocket's upper stage, which successfully placed the Dragon cargo spacecraft in orbit, used redesigned composite-overwrapped pressure vessels (COPVs) used to store helium to pressurize the stage's propellant tanks.

As it continued to descend, the rocket is seen in video to begin to spin like a slowly twirling pencil in a counterclockwise motion, the Merlin engine's beneath it fighting to stabilize its flight.

Wednesday's mission was SpaceX's 16th to resupply with space station.

But breaking four records isn't the only thing on SpaceX's plate this week - the company is targeting 1:16 p.m. ET Wednesday for a Falcon 9 launch from Cape Canaveral, this time with thousands of pounds of cargo for the International Space Station.

Groans filled SpaceX Mission Control in Hawthorne, California, as live video showed the first-stage booster spinning out of control, still high above Cape Canaveral. "Some landing systems are not redundant, as landing is considered ground safety critical, but not mission critical", he wrote.

But the tall portion of the rocket missed its goal of securing an upright landing on the solid ground at Cape Canaveral's Landing Zone 1.

But one of the booster's grid fins malfunctioned, SpaceX founder Elon Musk tweeted Wednesday, causing the booster to spin erratically. After more than two dozen successful rocket landings, SpaceX's most recent attempt resulted in a splashdown, though the rocket remained intact and was retrieved by the company.

"Appears to be undamaged and is transmitting data. Recovery ship dispatched", Musk tweeted. If SpaceX rockets misbehave, that could prompt the agency to perform a safety review and delay those experimental launches.

If the booster had veered off-course more than two minutes before landing, Gebhardt said, then it would have exploded.

As for the Dragon capsule, everything looks good to go as SpaceX is reuses a capsule that previously sent supplies to the space station in February 2017. Although it is nearly without a doubt too early to actually know if the booster is in good enough condition to ever fly again, Musk seemed to directly suggest that it could eventually relaunch in support of an "internal SpaceX mission", basically either Starlink or tech development.
