Google Removes Popular Android Apps - CM File Manager, Kika Keyboard - Over Ad Fraud
BuzzFeed asserts that the two companies may have made "millions of dollars" as a result of this form of ad-fraud.
The news comes a week after Buzzfeed and analytics firm Kochava reported that eight apps from Cheetah Mobile and Kika were engaged in ad fraud.
Best Hidden Gems: pen pal app Slowly; Unfold, an app that offers templates for Instagram Stories; augmented reality drawing app Just a Line; dream guide and recorder Luci; and musical language-learning app Learn Spanish with Lirica.
In addition, the company said it had also temporarily removed two other apps, Battery Doctor and CM Locker, because aspects of those applications were "obsolete and would require some time to update". Google initiated an investigation following the report and has removed CM File Manager (cache) and Kika Keyboard (cache).
The company found that these two apps contained code which can be used to execute ad fraud through various techniques.
Ever since Android 6.0 Marshmallow launched, Android has granted users control over app permissions, dictating what our apps can and cannot do. Now, you will notice a lot of familiar categories here, but the company has added a brand new category as well this year, the "Fan Favorite" category, which allowed users to cast their votes and select the very best content that they've enjoyed. The Chinese developer suggested that third party SDKs were to blame for any ad fraud, while also saying it would take legal action against Kochava.
As part of today's announcement, Cheetah maintained that, despite the negative appearance of Google Play's decision, File Manager was "an immaterial app" for the company, accounting for less than $58,000 in the third quarter, or 0.03 percent of the company's $197 million of revenue in the period.
Flutter has helped thousands of developers create easy-to-use apps for both iOS and Android, Google said, and it has already been used by major corporations like Alibaba and Tencent to create apps. However, Google has found that the Cheetah Mobile is guilty of being deceptive in its operation. Give us your thoughts in the comments!
