Canadian superstar Drake emerged as one of the leading artists at the Grammy Awards nominations on Friday, picking up seven nods, many of them in key categories. While both artists have done well in the past on their own - Beyonce with 22 wins to-date and Jay Z follows just behind with 21 - the couple didn't receive any nominations in the main categories this year, such as Album Of The Year or Song Of The Year.
Drake's change of heart this year helped Scorpion pick up nominations in several top categories - album, record and song of the year for God's Plan.
Women performers also achieved far greater presence in the 2019 edition of the top music awards, with Cardi B, Lady Gaga and folk-rock singer Brandi Carlile all nabbing nominations across the top categories. His song God's Plan is also vying for best rap performance against Travis Scott's Sicko Mode, a track where Drake appears as a guest.
The 61st annual music awards show will kick off live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles on February 10, celebrating the biggest stars in the music world. "Black Panther: The Album, Music From and Inspired By" is up for album of the year, a category where women make up five of the eight nominees.
Following Lamar, Drake - the year's most successful artist - earned seven nominations.
Who's Presenting?: Last year's Best New Artist victor, Alessia Cara, will join Shawn Mendes, Janelle Monae and Apple Music host Zane Lowe to announce the nominees in select categories.
The other rap categories have a wide range of choices as well.
But the nominations also resulted in snubs for some of the music industry's biggest stars, such as Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift and Justin Timberlake, among others. West, who has never won a Grammy in a major category, was also nominated for just one Grammy, for best non-classical producer.

Stars have been tweeting about their excitement at being nominated, with Dua Lipa, who is also nominated for best dance recording, for Electricity (with Mark Ronson and Diplo as Silk City), writing: "TWO NOMINATIONS TWO GRAMMY NOMINATIONS IM SO HAPPY BUT I CANT STOP CRYING I CANT BELIEVE IT!"
Brandon, Man. -raised violinist James Ehnes is nominated for classical instrumental solo for his concerto Kernis, while Toronto-born conductor Peter Oundjian also received a nod for classical compendium.
