Ex-MLB stars killed in highway bandit attack in Venezuela

Former Cubs infielder Luis Valbuena was killed in an auto accident Thursday night in his native Venezuela.

The two players were playing in the Venezuelan Winter League for the Leones del Caracas club and traveling for a game on Friday.

The Orange County Register verified the report and reported that their vehicle hit a rock and went off the road after they were traveling after a game.

Valbuena, an 11-year major league veteran, hit.199 with nine homers and 33 RBIs in 96 games this year for the Los Angeles Angels, who released him on August 7.

Castillo, 37, played the first four of his five major-league seasons with the Pirates from 2004-07. Carlos Rivero, who briefly played for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2014, was driving the auto and survived the incident. He also had stints with the Seattle Mariners, Cleveland Indians, Chicago Cubs and Houston Astros. "Our thoughts and prayers are with their loved ones during this time of grief", the Angels said in a statement. He left with a.226 batting average with 114 home runs and 367 career RBIs. He batted.254 with 39 home runs and 218 RBI during his five Major League Baseball seasons.

He was in the minor leagues in the United States as recently as 2017, playing for the Arizona Diamondbacks' Triple-A Reno affiliate.
