Oscars ask Kevin Hart to apologize for homophobic tweets, comedian refuses

Twitter found Oscars host Kevin Hart's homophobic jokes

Kevin Hart

Kevin Hart has been a certified A-list star for several years now, but his latest role, as the host for the 2019 Oscars, has brought homophobic statements and tweets from his past under a new level of scrutiny.

Kevin Hart was announced as the host of the 2019 Oscars earlier this week, but he might get pulled from the show.

"This is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many unbelievable talented artists", Hart wrote. "I sincerely apologize to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past", Hart tweeted. I don't know what to tell you, ' said Hart, who added, in all-caps: 'I love everybody'.

The tweets highlighted by Lee have all now been deleted by Hart, but a quick Twitter search confirms that there's a lot more where they came from that have yet to be deleted.

In an Instagram video posted Thursday, Hart responded to the criticism - although he didn't exactly apologize.

Hart was tapped the host the Oscars earlier this week, amid reports that the job had become increasingly hard to fill. Hart has since spoken about the joke, telling Rolling Stone in 2015 that it was really about his "own insecurities" as a parent, again reiterating he's not homophobic and saying he "wouldn't tell that joke today, because when I said it, the times weren't as sensitive as they are now".

"Stop looking for reasons to be negative", Hart wrote in the previous Instagram post. He then launched into stories about his son, then 3, having his first gay moment with a friend and how he needed to "nip it in the bud" by screaming at him, "Stop, that's gay!"

On the 4th of December, Tuesday, the 39-year-old comedian said he would be at the helm of the Oscars next year.

What do you think of the Kevin Hart tweets and how he's responded to them?

"I've moved on", he said. I'm nearly 40 years old and I am in love with the man I'm becoming. Next time he has something rude and blatantly homophobic to say, maybe he should keep it off the internet, where - as we're all now well aware - things you've said really do last forever. I'm not going to do it, man.

Hart's defenders are few and far between with really only his wife stepping in to say that only God can judge him. Ahead of the 2012 Academy Awards, producer Brett Ratner, who had been paired with host Eddie Murphy, resigned days after using a gay slur at a film screening.
