Phillies Trade for All-Star Shortstop Segura

A short-lived, star-crossed union: How the Phillies...

Phillies, Mariners Nearing Deal Centered Around Jean Segura

The Phillies have acquired infielder Jean Segura, right-handed pitcher Juan Nicasio and left-handed pitcher James Pazos from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for infielders J.P. Crawford and Carlos Santana, the club announced tonight.

In 2018, Segura hit.304/.341/.415 with 10 home runs and 20 steals. They'd probably be better off prioritizing Bryce Harper or Manny Machado, as offense was a big issue for the team last season.

In time, don't be surprised if acquiring Segura is just the beginning of what should be an exciting offseason for the Phillies. One, the other or even both, could still be in red pinstripes soon, although it was a different star whose destination was Philadelphia on Monday.

Philadelphia will start Segura at shortstop for the foreseeable future. Source indicates Segura is expected to waive his no-trade clause and be dealt as early as Monday.

Segura, 28, is coming off an All-Star season and will make $14.25 million in each of the next four seasons.

With all due respect to J.P. Crawford since the potential always seemed to be there, the addition of Segura would clearly be an upgrade at the position.

"Carlos Santana has been among the most durable players in the big leagues over the last eight years and has been a fixture in the middle of lineups during that time", Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto said in a press release. Crawford, 23, was lauded by the front office for his control of the strike zone while in the minors, but didn't hit for average over parts of two seasons in Philadelphia.

While the deal immediately improves Philadelphia's roster, what does it mean for the Phillies in relation to the Harper and Machado sweepstakes?

Segura first became a name to look out for in 2013 when he was named to his first MLB All-Star game as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers.
