D-backs fans were devastated about the Paul Goldschmidt trade
The Cardinals will introduce Goldschmidt at a news conference Friday in St. Louis.
After making a big splash by acquiring Paul Goldschmidt on Wednesday, the St. Louis Cardinals are no longer expected to target high-priced free agents this offseason. Especially when the deal brought in a six-time All-Star, four-time Silver Slugger, three-time Gold Glove, two-time runner-up for MVP. He hit.290 with 33 home runs and 83 RBI last season. Goldschmidt is set to earn $14.5 million in 2019, the final year of his contract.
Arizona went 82-80 in the NL West and finished behind the Los Angeles Dodgers and Colorado, which both made the playoffs.
Since 2013, Goldschmidt ranks second among National Leaguers in home runs (181), RBIs (602), hits (996), runs (599), walks (575) and extra-base hits (413). And there was obvious concern about the D-backs' ability to sign him beyond this season.
"We've been busy this off-season working to upgrade our lineup, and today we are excited to announce the acquisition of one of the game's premier players in first baseman Paul Goldschmidt", Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak said in a statement. He recorded a 4.95 ERA in 136.1 innings over 30 appearances (including 25 starts) with St. Louis in 2018, but had been better the year before with a 3.88 ERA in 60.1 innings.
