The Latest: AP top player Murray adds O’Brien; Tua wins Camp
Murray was the most exciting player in college football this season and his success has many thinking he could reverse course and choose the NFL over the Major League Baseball.
He is up against Ohio State's Dwayne Haskins and Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa for the Heisman Trophy which will be presented Saturday night. Tagovailoa won two player of the year awards, taking the Walter Camp and Maxwell awards. He joins Henry (2015) and McCarron (2013) as the only Crimson Tide players to win the Maxwell Award.
Murray also was the star centerfielder on Oklahoma's baseball team, hitting.296 with 10 home runs.
Tagovailoa received the Maxwell Award for player of the year while Murray was named the nation's top quarterback with the Davey O'Brien Award at the College Football Awards show in Atlanta.
Murray and Tagovailoa will then face each other in the College Football Playoff, when No. 1 Alabama plays No. 4 Oklahoma at the Orange Bowl semifinal on December 29. Murray, who batted.296 with 10 home runs and 13 doubles in 50 games as the Sooners' center fielder, signed for almost $5 million, with the A's agreeing to let him return to school and play football this season. He also has rushed for 892 yards and 11 TDs. The last Walter Camp victor to miss out on the Heisman was Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o. And only five Heisman winners have failed to win AP Player of the Year since the award started in 1998.
Friday, Murray was trying to enjoy his first trip to New York City.
"I think he's been one of the best players in college football all year long", Alabama head coach Nick Saban said last week.
Maybe he should learn, given the fact that he's already signed a baseball contract worth more than $4.5 million with the Oakland A's and could have an even bigger contract awaiting him if he were to be a high pick in the NFL Draft next spring.
