Bronx Gets Priority in de Blasio's NYC Care Initiative
11 January 2019, 03:27 | Randall Craig
Bill de Blasio at a press conference announcing NYC Care
"We are saying the word "guarantee" because we can make it happen", he announced, pledging to put $100 million toward the new initiative.
The announcement makes NY the second US city to attempt to provide health care to everyone living there, coming about a dozen years after San Francisco pioneered the idea with a more limited promise. The healthcare-for-all plan is not limited to American citizens and would also include individuals who can not afford their existing plans.
'This is one universal way to reach all those folks right now who are not covered'. Mayor de Blasio should look out for the legal residents of the city who are footing the bill before extending more expensive taxpayer funded benefits to illegal aliens.
Thank you @NYCMayor for your commitment to cover all NYC residents, including those who are undocumented; this is a big step in the right direction-but healthcare is still a human right, and must be extended to everyone in the state! If health care is now free in New York Citythen why would the other 7.5 million residents carry on paying tens of thousands a year for their own health care insurance?
Dr. Mitchell Katz, the CEO of the public hospital system, said the city will hire additional primary-care doctors to meet an expected growth in demand.
"Move over to Hoboken", Thiessen said, adding that skipping town to neighboring New Jersey will avoid the higher taxes that he predicted would come.
The news, however, came with a caveat; although overall deaths declined, the number of pedestrians killed in traffic increased a year ago, city officials noted last week.
Lee also noted that the governor's plan to restore an individual mandate penalty - which would be levied on those who don't have health insurance - would lower health care costs and increase enrollment. The city already has a kind of public option for health insurance for low-income New Yorkers, through an insurance plan run by city hospitals and known as MetroPlus. He argued that preventative care and access to primary care doctors will cut down on emergency room visits.
Covering more undocumented Californians is part of a broader health care package Newsom unveiled Monday.
While contrasting NYC Care with the Republican effort to eliminate the Affordable Care Act, the mayor said the city's new program is specific to the needs of New York City and was likely not suitable to be applied at a state or national level. We just have to keep working at it!
De Blasio is promising a more efficient system, where people who pay on a sliding scale based on income can access medical and mental health care.
"If we don't help people get the health care, we're going to pay plenty on the back end when people get really sick. Everyone should have a right to affordable, safe, culturally sensitive, high-quality health care regardless of their economic situations", said Flatbush Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte.
'There are enormous savings, humanly and economically, to getting it right. "That's the ideal, that's what we need".
