Bauer's sweets chocolate or caramel Modjeskas are being recalled for possible hepatitis A contamination, health officials warn.
Officials said a worker in the facility tested positive for hepatitis A and all sweets purchased after November 14 should be thrown away and not eaten. While the possibility of transmission from the candy is low, the agency recommends that anyone who ate the sweets after November 14th who haven't been vaccinated speak to their healthcare provider to determine whether they should be given post-exposure prophylaxis.
The FDA is working with Bauer's sweets on a voluntary recall, the agency added, adding the sweets were primarily sold through QVC and the company's website.
The firm said the employee tested positive for the virus had worked at the facility from November 16 to November 23, said Anna Bauer, president of Bauer's sweets, in a statement.
Symptoms - which include fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and dark urine - can take anywhere from two to seven weeks after exposure to appear.
"An investigation by our local health department and the FDA found that the risk of contamination to the candy made during this time is extremely low", read the statement on the Bauer's sweets website. It can be spread through contaminated food or water. But it can, in rare cases, cause a loss of liver function, namely in older adults or people with preexisting liver diseases.
