LG Electronics (LG) has unveiled the world's first rollable OLED TV in which the screen retracts into a box when not in use.
LG showed flexible displays and OLED screens for several exhibitions CES, but it was just a demonstration and nothing more.
The LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R (model 65R9) reimagines the everyday TV with a revolutionary form factor only made possible by the company's industry-leading OLED technology, boasting picture and sound quality that is second to none.
The TV consists of a large base stand which represents the audio system as well as the innards into which the actual OLED panel can roll itself down into.
When its rolled up, the 65-inch screen is completely hidden from view.
At the base of the TV is a 100 watt front-firing Dolby Atmos sound bar which also serves as a housing unit for the TV when you're not watching it. LG has also showcased innovative displays at CES 2019 including an 88-inch and 65-inch 8K OLED screen, a 27-inch Neo Art concept screen, a 27-inch 4K screen with just 0.11-inch bezels and a 13.3-inch 4K display with a power consumption of 2.8W.
'A rollable OLED TV is a true game-changer, liberating users from the limitations of the wall and freeing them to curate their own personal space which no longer needs to be reserved full time for TV viewing'. The TV space is one area where we haven't seen any new innovations in terms of the design.
Nonetheless, up close the picture quality of the LG model is spectacular.
LG is keen to make the TV the centrepiece of a connected living room and is leading the charge when it comes to imbuing its TVs with third party smart assistants.
There's also a mode LG calls "Line Mode" where the display will drop down so that only about one-fourth of the panel is showing to control on-screen music controls and home gadget apps. For convenient playback and mirroring, LG will be adding support for AirPlay 2 by Apple. Based on the image in the live stream video, we can also presumably expect to see all of LG's latest smart home devices and appliances, including washing machines, refrigerators, cameras, and more.
