If You Share Netflix Password With Others, an AI Could Hunt You Down
This week at CES 2019 in Las Vegas, video software provider Synamedia revealed new technology that could help put an end to account sharing.
The fraudulent behavior can also generate a message that, in some instances, asks a Netflix or other account holder if they would like to upgrade to the streaming service's premium option that includes sharing.
The UK-based company Synamedia says it created an algorithm that looks for patterns among users that indicate a shared password.
If caught sharing, users could then be offered a premium service that allows for password sharing and more concurrent users.
Chances are you share a Netflix account with someone.
In order for the software to work, a streaming service like Netflix, Hulu or HBO Now buys access to Synamedia's platform, which analyzes data from all its users.
FOX News reports that the company found research showing about 26% of millennials give other people their credentials for video streaming services.
"Casual credentials sharing is becoming too expensive to ignore", Jean Marc Racine, CPO and GM EMEA of Synamedia, said.
Meanwhile Parks Associates predicts that by 2021, $9.9billion of pay-tv revenues and $1.2billion of streaming revenues will be lost to password sharing. If the sharing pattern is extreme, which might mean that the credentials have been sold online to multiple users, the streaming service could simply shut down the accounts.
For example, it checks what content you're watching in what location.
'Our new solution gives operators the ability to take action.
It uses behavioral analytics and machine learning to track how many people are logged into a single account, as well as where they log in from. "It's a great way to keep honest people honest while benefiting from an incremental revenue stream", said Racine.
