Report: Cavs Could Lose 1st-Round Draft Pick for Signing and Waiving Patrick McCaw

Report: Warriors ask NBA to investigate Cavs' signing, release of Patrick McCaw

The NBA has continued its formal review into Cleveland signing McCaw to a two-year, $6 million deal and subsequently waiving him three days later before his contract would become guaranteed.

In any case, McCaw is now a member of the Raptors, who will be back in action on Friday night when they host the Brooklyn Nets (7:30 p.m. ET - Watch on FuboTV with NBA League Pass add-on), which is a great outcome to this whole scenario for him.

The NBA-leading Toronto Raptors have added to their roster, signing free agent guard Patrick McCaw.

McCaw, 23, joined Cleveland Dec. 30 after the Warriors declined to match the Cavaliers' offer sheet.

But the former second-round pick was a restricted free agent. It was the end of a freaky saga that involved a half-season holdout, an offer sheet, a surprising release, and an ongoing investigation by the National Basketball Association into how it all went down.

That's when things got really odd.

McCaw averaged 4.0 points in 128 regular-season appearances with the Warriors in the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons.

McCaw cleared waivers on Wednesday afternoon, sources said. He gets to play for one of the Eastern Conference's best teams and could make it back to the Finals for the third time in three seasons.

The Warrior filed a request with the National Basketball Association to investigate whether the transactions qualified as salary-cap circumvention.

The Raptors announced Thursday that the club had signed McCaw, although terms of the deal were not disclosed.

After only a week in Cleveland, McCaw was waived before his contract was guaranteed. "But if the National Basketball Association voided McCaw's contract, he could become a restricted free agent again".
