Davis Police Department officials say Officer Natalie Corona (above, left) was investigating a three-car traffic accident at about 6:45 p.m. on Thursday near Sacramento when one of the people involved in the crash opened fire, striking her.
"This clearly, to us, looks like an ambush", Pytel told reporters. "There are a limited number of police officers but mutual aid has been called in". "We're just absolutely devastated about the loss", he said.
Chico Police Chief O'Brien said the department always has conversations about officer safety.
The shooting came just over two weeks after the slaying of Ronil Singh, an officer with the police department in Newman, a city about 115 miles south of Davis.
"She was a rising star in the department", Davis Police Chief Darren Pytel said at a press conference Thursday night.
A man was seen walking holding a black and grey American flag, outside UC Davis Medical Center in honor of a Davis police officer who was killed in the line of duty.
The shooter has been found, deceased, inside a home near 5th and E St in Davis with what appears to be a self inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities have yet to released the identity of the deceased suspect. Jose Merced Corona is a retired Colusa County sheriff's sergeant who was elected to the Board of Supervisors last November. He stepped down from the force in 2012 after 26 years.
She followed in the footsteps of her father, Merced Corona, who worked in law enforcement. "Your family at the Colusa County Sheriff's Office stands with you in this hard time".
She is survived by her parents.
Davis police spokesman Doroshov said the agency hasn't lost an officer in the line of duty since 1959, when officer Douglas Cantrill was killed.
"Sadly this reminds us that public safety is a unsafe job and can come at a very steep price". Police have not said anyone other than the officer was shot.
She wrote in a status update in 2016: 'I would like this photograph to serve as my gratitude for all those law enforcement men and women who have served, who are now serving, and those who have died in the line of duty protecting our liberties in this great country'. "#LawEnforcement #Blueline #Thankyou #Lausphotography - feeling thankful".
Residents described the town, which has little more than 3,000 residents, as a place where everyone knows everyone, and news travels fast. No words of gratitude can express the ultimate sacrifice of Officer Corona. My condolences to your friends and family. "May you Rest in Peace Officer Corona".
A Facebook post from the police department shows Corona carrying a bag of gifts to a Camp Fire victim in December.
"That's a very hard detail for the officers, but something that's very important to us", Pytel said.
After unloading gunshots, the suspect went to his home nearby and chatted with his roommate without "showing any sign he was involved in the incident", Pytel said.
No one had been arrested in the shooting, and it is not known what led to the killing, Raymond said.
"We're speculating that she never even saw him", Pytel said.
"This was the job that she was meant to do. She was so determined and hard working", said another friend, Isabel Espindola.
Gov. John Bel Edwards weighed in on the fatal shooting, calling the death a "tragic loss".
In October 2016, Corona posted a picture on Facebook. But I made a decision to stand tall on my dream.
