Police are searching for 13-year-old Jayme Closs
It was his neighbor, Jeanne Nutter, and the missing girl who'd vanished without a trace nearly three months ago. "She's the one who helped us break this case", Mr Fitzgerald told reporters.
The 21-year-old Patterson is accused of killing Jayme's parents, James and Denise Closs, in an attack at the family home in October near Barron. Jayme had not been seen since her parents were murdered there on October 15.
Douglas County Sheriff Tom Dalbec says his office received a 911 call at about 4:30 p.m. saying Jayme Closs had been located.
Jayme will soon be reunited with her family, officials said during a news conference on Friday.
Kasinskas said she taught Patterson science in middle school, but added: "I don't really remember a ton about him".
"What a great feeling to have her home".
Kasinskas said that three officers initially arrived at her home.
Kasinskas called 911 to report the girl had been found after another neighbor out walking her dog encountered Jayme and brought her to Kasinskas' house.
The paper described her as thin and dirty with matted hair and wearing shoes that did not fit. "She didn't have any emotion - she was probably in shock". A description Jayme provided led to his arrest a short time later.
Investigators have said Patterson's goal was to kidnap Jayme, but he appears to have no connection to the family.
"She said that this person's name was Jake Patterson, 'he killed my parents and took me,"' said another neighbour, Kristin Kasinskas.
Jayme escaped Thursday from a cabin in Gordon, Wisconsin, where she said he had imprisoned her. Police arrested Patterson minutes later.
But in the end, Fitzgerald said, Jayme ended up saving herself.
Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent Justin Tolomeo told reporters: "In cases like this we often need a big break - it was Jayme herself who gave us that break". The couple offered her food and water, but she declined both.
Patterson had worked for less than two days at a turkey processing plant where Closs' parents worked, but the sheriff said he did not have any contact with them.
"At this time, nothing in this case shows the suspect knew anyone at the Closs home or at any time had contact with anyone in the Closs family", Fitzgerald said.
"She's no doubt been through just a bad ordeal". People here did not want to talk on camera but did say they never saw Patterson in town.
"He was like 11, 12 when I would have had him as a student", Kristin Kasinkas said.
The Patterson family moved to Gordon about 15 years ago and Jake and Erik were raised there and attended Minong High School, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
"He seemed like a quiet kid, " she said.
He said the unemployed suspect had ties to the Barron area, but did not elaborate.
The authorities have released few details about Patterson, who has no previous criminal record in Wisconsin.
Patterson is being held on two counts of first degree intentional homicide for the murder of Jayme's parents and one count of kidnapping. Patterson is expected to make his initial court appearance on the charges on Monday. The girl's grandfather, Robert Naiberg, insisted Saturday that none of them know him, raising questions about how Patterson became aware of Jayme.
Jayme's aunt Sue Allard told Minnesota newspaper the Star Tribune that she could barely express her joy after learning the news. I can't wait to get my arms around her. "I just can't wait".
