PC sales struggle yet again
According to IDC, shipments of traditional PCs came in at 68.1m units during the fourth quarter which is down by 3.7 per cent from the same time previous year.
The big hit, apparently, came from a shortage of processor chips, Gartner senior principal analyst Mikako Kitagawa said. However, Lenovo, HP, and Dell enjoyed shipment growth over the year at the expense of all the other manufacturers. The company also says that it expects demand to improve in 2019, as CPUs become more available.
The Asia/Pacific PC market totaled 24.2 million units in the fourth quarter of 2018, a 4.6 percent decline from the same period of 2017. Kitagawa put this down to two factors: economic uncertainty among small to medium businesses and weak holiday purchases.
Political and economic uncertainties in some countries dampened PC demand. The top three vendors were able to boost their market share and Lenovo claimed the number one spot followed by HP and Dell.
Mac shipments themselves declined 3.8 percents over Q4 and declined 2.1 percent over the year.
Respective shares of HP and Dell were 21.7 percent and 16.2 percent in the global PC market in 2018, and their shipments were 56.332 million units and 41.911 million units, respectively. "The market stabilization in 2018 was attributed to consistent business PC growth, driven by Windows 10 upgrade". -China trade relations, there was cautionary demand.
