Israel Opens Apartheid Road

Israel opens 'Apartheid Road' dividing Palestinians, settlers in occupied West Bank

Israel opens segregated highway dubbed 'Apartheid Road'

The Palestinian men were arrested near Ramallah while Israeli troops sought to locate the shooter who fired on a bus stop outside the West Bank settlement of Givat Asaf.

"The western side serves Palestinians who can not enter Jerusalem, while the eastern side is reserved for Israeli settlers".

"Apartheid Road", which was built more than 10 years ago, remained closed amid a dispute between the Israel Defense Forces and the country's police in connection with a new checkpoint.

"This is an Israeli example of apartheid and racist separation that once existed in South Africa", PLO Executive Committee member Ahmad Majdalani told Israeli media.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry said in a press statement that the new Israeli plan "undermines the credibility of the worldwide community and the possibility to reach a political solution to the conflict".

Earlier Tuesday, Israeli daily Haaretz confirmed that Israel was planning to build a major settlement neighborhood in the occupied West Bank.

In 2002, Israel began building a security barrier separating Jerusalem from the rest of the West Bank in an bid to bolster security following the Second Intifada; Palestinians dubbed the undertaking the "apartheid road" and have repeatedly called for it to be taken down.

The long-term goal is to provide settlers with another route to allow them to access Jerusalem more directly, said Aviv Tatarsky of Israeli NGO Ir Amim, which opposes settlement expansion.

Palestinians have long feared that the road and other similar construction projects in the area would eventually split the West Bank in half, further hindering Palestinian plans for a future state. In this case, however, the wall separates the whole route.

The International Court of Justice said in 2004 that the apartheid wall violated international law and urged Israel to remove it.
