The six-hour documentary Surviving R. Kelly, which aired earlier this month on United States cable channel Lifetime, includes allegations from multiple women who accuse Kelly of sexual misconduct, sometimes with minors.

Following the airing of the Lifetime documentary Surviving R Kelly, which details the allegations of abuse and statutory rape against Kelly, Chicago police have confirmed they spoke to the Ignition singer after the Cook County State's Attorney's office received a tip that two women were being held against their will at the star's residence in Trump Tower.

According to reports, Kelly has not watched the documentary series and is said to be "disgusted" by the charges levelled against him.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Greenberg portrayed Kelly, one of the top-selling recording artists of all time, as a victim of a television hit piece. "The man was not operating a harem, or a sex cult, or holding people hostage or anything like that".

R. Kelly's daughter Joann Kelly, aka Buku Abi, with whom he is estranged, called him a "monster" on Instagram, writing: "I am well aware of who and what he is".

Greenberg explained that he and Kelly "have not looked at all of the women" that appeared in the documentary, adding that "all that matters is that whatever any of them are saying did not happen".

The lawyer claimed women have "come on to" Kelly in the hopes of kick-starting their own careers, only to become "disgruntled" when their plans didn't pan out as planned. Lifetime did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

His ex-wife Andrea Kelly, whom he divorced in 2009, accused him of domestic abuse last year and feared for her life during one attack during their 13-year marriage, which ended in 2009. But he said that was not necessary to determine that they lied, noting that none of them ever went to police or presented anyone with evidence of physical abuse.
