VLC Expected to Break 3B Downloads at CES, Will Add Airplay Soon
Conveniently enough, the milestone was crossed during CES where the developer was demonstrating new features heading to the app.
At CES 2019, VLC announced the support for AppleAirPlay which will allow users to stream any video from their Android or iOS device to Apple TV. With its addition, it could finally mean that users will be able to beam content playing on the VLC mobile app to an Apple TV - something now not possible. There is no release date yet at all. Let us know in the comments!
VLC is one of the world's most popular video players, largely thanks to the fact that it's open sourced and can support pretty much any video or audio format that you throw at it.
The VLC development team added support for Chromecast, Google's AirPlay equivalent, earlier this year. VLC developer, Ludovic Fauvet, later tweeted an image of the download counter with the 3 billion mark having just been surpassed. VideoLAN is present these days at CES 2019 in Las Vegas and celebrated the major milestone with a futuristic countdown at their booth, and said that they're working on VLC 4, a massive release that would add long-anticipated features. First up is a major update to VLC's Android app in about a month, which will introduce support for AirPlay.
To make it possible, headset manufacturers using SDK would have needed to add a massive amount of code with hundreds of megabytes to make the headset compatible with the main VLC app. Instead, they went their own route so that users would be able to watch traditional 2D movies in a virtual theater environment using their application. The team expects the app to hit that number sometime today, with a quarter of that downloads being onto mobile devices.
