House GOP leader vows action against King over race remarks

Kevin McCarthy on "Face the Nation": "Action will be taken" against Steve King for white supremacy comment

Tim Scott, the GOP's Lone Black Senator, Takes His Party to Task for Tolerating Unhinged Racists

McCarthy did not elaborate on what action he plans on taking after his meeting with King. "Why did I sit in classes teaching me about the merits of our history and our civilization?"

"That language has no place in America", McCarthy said on the program. "I'm having a serious conversation with Congressman Steve King on his future and role in this Republican Party". He slammed white supremacy and white nationalism as "evil" and urged leaders from both parties to condemn King's comments.

McCarthy did not say specifically what action would be taken, but stressed the point on Sunday.

According to CBS, McCarthy said after the interview aired that he is reviewing whether or not King should keep his committee assignments, which includes a spot on the highly influential House Judiciary Committee.

King has not apologized for his remarks though in a floor speech Friday, he rejected the label that he's a white nationalist and said he regretted "the heartburn that has poured forth upon this Congress and this country and especially in my state and in my congressional district". "Instead, they must actually condemn Mr. King by removing him from his committee assignments so that he can no longer affect policies that impact the very people he has made it clear he disdains". It's true that like the Founding Fathers, I am an advocate for Western civilization's values, and that I profoundly believe that America is the greatest tangible expression of these ideals the world has ever seen. "But the more you guys write about that stuff, then it becomes an issue".

The House Republican leader said Sunday he will meet with Rep. Steve King this week to discuss King's future and role in the party and promised action following the Iowa congressman's recent comments in defense of white supremacy.

"I haven't given it any thought", King said.

"We have made significant progress in our nation, and while there is still work to do, we can not let these intolerant and hateful views hold us back". I think all of us ought to be united, regardless of party, in saying, white supremacism, white nationalism, is hatred. "This is a uniquely fractured time in our nation's history, not our worst but far from our best, and it is only together that we will rebuild the trust we seem to have lost in each other", Scott wrote in The Washington Post. King has represented western Iowa in Congress since 2003.
