Most of the world was able to catch a glimpse of the rare event, but it was especially visible to the populations of North and South America, Europe and Africa. This one, in late January/early February, is sometimes called the Wolf Moon. Still, space enthusiasts who missed this week's show may have to wait quite some time before the next total lunar eclipse. But there's a little more to it than that.
The so-called "super blood wolf moon" slips into Earth's dark umbral shadow during a total lunar eclipse behind the Tours's cathedral on January 21, 2019 in France.
"The Super Moon is different and special because of the orbit of the moon around the earth and because it isn't a ideal circle, it's egg-shaped", David explained.
The lunar eclipse on January 21, 2019 before the moon is fully cast in shadow, hovering over the dome of the church St. Elisabeth in Nuremberg, Germany. When the full moon moved into Earth's shadow, it darkened, however, didn't disappear.
As the moon came into contact with Earth's shadow it darkened, and sunlight passing through our planet's atmosphere made the moon look red.
The full eclipse began at 4.40 am in the United Kingdom and appeared red at 5.12 am, according to the Royal Astronomical Society. Instead tribes gave each full moon a nickname to keep track of the seasons and lunar months.
The "wolf" part comes from the name given to full moons in January - "wolf moons". The total eclipse lasted one hour and two minutes (11:41 p.m. - 12:43 a.m.), with the greatest coverage of the moon happening at 12:12 a.m.
"Viewers will see a normal full moon at first starting at around 10:35 p.m".
Over the moon: A statue in Buenos Aires, Argentina appears ready to touch earth's satellite.
The next eclipse is only expected in 2021. To be even more precise, the Royal Astronomical Society said viewers in northwestern France, northwestern Spain, Portugal, the eastern Pacific and northeastern tip of Russian Federation would see the total eclipse.
This year's only total lunar eclipse generated plenty of buzz, according to the USA media.
Vincent said solar eclipse is about the masculine and lunar eclipse is about the feminine energy.
The lunar eclipse is in Leo while the sun is in Aquarius.
According to The Weather Network, since the moon would be "very near perigee - its closest distance to Earth", the result was a Super Blood Wolf Moon Total Lunar Eclipse.
