Of the 34 cases, 24 are children between age 1 and 10. Clark County Public Health Officer Alan Melnick told the paper that if vaccination rates don't go up in the area, the state could be seeing more incidents like this one moving forward.
There are another nine suspected cases. According to an October report by the CDC, 2018 was the third consecutive year in which numbers of children entering school with vaccine exemptions rose. In recent years, however, the viral illness has popped up again from NY to California and sickened hundreds.
"What keeps me up at night is eventually having a child die from this completely preventable situation", he said.
"We're having our children stay home for a number of days, we're asking people actually to be diagnosed in their homes and not actually at the doctor's office because that can infect people in the office", he responded. Rep. Paul Harris, who represents Clark County, says his bill in the House is aiming to get personal exemptions off the table only when it comes to the measles. The first known patients in this outbreak sought medical care on December 31, but officials don't know if other people may have gotten sick before that and did not seek treatment, the AP reported.
Children traveling overseas may need to be vaccinated before their first birthday, and women who are hoping to become pregnant should discuss vaccinations with their health care provider, as the MMR vaccine is not recommended during pregnancy.
The full vaccine is 97 percent effective and provides immunity for life. To this day, it still kills 100,000 children a year worldwide, most under the age of five.
