Sudden outbreak of measles prompts emergency declaration, renews vaccination debate
Measles cases are surfacing across the country as an outbreak tied to the highly contagious viral infection continues to spread.
For the second time in a week, CT state health officials report a confirmed measles case in New Haven County. Those who get the proper doses of the vaccine rarely contract the disease even if they are exposed.
The only details about the three infected individuals that have been released is that two are young boys under the age of 2 and the third is a woman between the ages of 25 and 35 years old.
She said there have been two cases of measles in 29 years in Auburn and both were not vaccinated.
The CDC said that at least eight other states have reported cases of the measles in 2019: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, New Jersey, New York and Oregon. "However, it is easily preventable". Doctors can't stress the fact enough that getting the measles vaccine means that you most likely won't have to worry about ever getting the disease.
The outbreak in Clark County, Washington, involves 49 confirmed cases of measles and nine suspected cases, according to local public health officials.
As with a similar outbreak among Orthodox Jews in NY state, almost all of the infected were unvaccinated. Surveillance Report of the Department's Epidemiology Bureau, majority of the cases of measles nationwide are of children ages 1-4 years who were not vaccinated. If a person with measles is in a room and simply coughs, a person that is in the same room and it is not vaccinated, can get the virus from the droplets in the air. Two doses of the vaccine are about 97 percent effective at preventing measles; one dose is about 93 percent effective.
People may have been exposed to the risky disease at more than three dozen locations, many in neighboring OR, such as Portland International Airport and the Moda Center, home to the Portland Trail Blazers. However, he said an older person with a weaker immune system could have a higher chance of a unsafe infection if not vaccinated.
"The less that children are vaccinated, it makes a community more susceptible", she said. As of 2000, measles was declared eliminated in the United States or no longer constantly present, though spot outbreaks occur. One victim had had one MMR vaccine, but not a follow-up shot.
Symptoms of measles generally begin a week to 14 days after infection. If left untreated, encephalitis, a potentially fatal inflammation of the brain, can develop. "It can be on surfaces", explained Dr. Phil Huang, Medical Director and Health Authority for Austin Public Health.
