In Democratic response, Abrams sharply rebukes Trump

Trump made no mention of an emergency declaration his remarks.

Stacey Ambrams delivered the Democratic Response to the State of the Union Address.

The recent 35-day partial government shutdown over wall funding was evidence of Trump's weakened position.

Pelosi, dressed in white like many of her female Democratic colleagues, sat behind Trump during his speech on Tuesday.

He paid tribute to the family of an elderly couple killed by an undocumented immigrant last month in Reno, Nev., and to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer who investigates global sex trafficking. "So, even as I am very disappointed by the president's approach to our problems I still don't want him to fail".

With the longest government shutdown in American history over and the looming possibility of a new one in the coming days, Trump attempted to call for bipartisanship as he listed his administration's accomplishments when it comes to criminal justice reform, trade deals, energy production and the economy. But the proper wall never got built.

That line was one of several during the immigration section of his remarks that scored a standing ovation from Republicans.

"Here, in the United States, we are alarmed by new calls to adopt socialism in our country", Trump continued, to a smattering of boos.

Bernie Sanders delivered a 28-minute rebuttal to President Donald Trump's State of the Union on Tuesday that focused on what the president left out of his own speech: Climate change.

Democrats flatly rejected that offer, which had been denounced by conservative border hawks.

The government shut down for more than a month over Trump's demands for $5.7 billion for his promised border wall with Mexico. Abrams's name has been floated as a potential 2020 U.S. Senate candidate against Republican incumbent David Perdue.

Trump has also announced plans to withdraw the 2,000 USA troops from Syria, saying Islamic State has largely been defeated there.

He called the situation at the border an "urgent national crisis", a characterization that Democrats and border residents and officials largely dispute. "It will be deployed in the areas identified by border agents as having the greatest need, and as these agents will tell you, where walls go up, illegal crossings go way, way down". He pointed to San Diego and El Paso as examples of cities with successful border barriers. "My family understood firsthand that while success is not guaranteed, we live in a nation where opportunity is possible", she said.

"In the past, most of the people in this room voted for a wall". The president on Tuesday recognized that "more women serving in the Congress than ever before".

The Trump administration has enacted a series of measures aimed at stopping the families, but some have been halted in federal courts, including a ban on asylum for Central Americans. As of January, the unemployment rate stands at just 4 percent.

The White House is also considering imposing tariffs of up to 25 percent on imports of automobiles and vehicle parts.
