Measles infections hit decade high in Europe

One case of measles confirmed in Bell County

A measles outbreak near Portland Ore. has revived a bitter debate over so-called “philosophical” exemptions to childhood vaccinations. MMR protects against measles mumps and rubella

The inquiries for measles remedy has risen sharply in Washington County, where this year the highly contagious virus is associated with more than 50 incidents of the illness, involving people who have previously avoided vaccinations.

Vaccination rates in King County - where the other single measles case in Washington was is located - also went up.

Some 82,596 people in 47 of 53 countries contracted measles, the highest number this decade and three times the figure in 2017.

Washington state Rep. Paul Harris (R-Vancouver) has introduced a measurethat would remove personal belief exemptions for the MMR vaccine. Lower vaccination rates can lead to higher death rates. One day without a new measles case might seem an indicator of hope the outbreak is over, but it unfortunately doesn't necessarily indicate the end.

The United States is experiencing measles outbreaks in New York state, New York City and Washington state, which the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said began when travelers to Israel and the Ukraine returned to the US infected. Since Jan. 1, 51 confirmed cases and 13 suspect cases have been identified.

A total of 72 children and adults died in 2018 following infection, the World Health Organization said.

Advocates on both sides of the childhood vaccines debate are expected to attend. Between January 13 and February 2, 2,739 children and 1,754 adults were vaccinated compared to 630 children and 60 adults over the same period a year ago. Health officials are not providing information about this individual in order to protect their privacy.

Anyone with questions about their measles immunity or the measles vaccine should contact their primary care provider. According to the aforementioned study, other areas that are considered hotspots include Phoenix, Arizona; Salt Lake City, Utah; Provo, Utah; Fort Worth, Texas; Austin, Texas; Kansas City, Missouri; and Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Numerous articles these organizations produce closely resemble scientific articles, Melnick says.

And leading health officials are stressing the importance of getting vaccinated.

Dr. Hotez said that the research team is now conducting a follow-up study to investigate the social and political demographics of the urban and rural hotspot areas to help public health officials understand the vaccine hesitancy movement. "There are some more isolated, unvaccinated communities, for example the Amish, where we haven't seen a major outbreak".
