Ceferin reelected as UEFA President
10 February 2019, 05:03 | Anna Jefferson
FIFA president Gianni Infantino
Aleksander Čeferin has been unanimously re-elected as president of Uefa for the next four years.
Voted in during the annual UEFA Congress at a luxury hotel in Rome, Ceferin said the new-look tournaments, to be introduced from 2024, would bring a "new dimension" to European football.
Ceferin told UEFA's 55 member associations who elected him unopposed that "with unity restored" he was taking over with "fewer doubts and less scepticism than back then".
The 51-year-old Ceferin was elected by acclamation as the only candidate standing at the 43rd UEFA congress in Rome.
Ceferin took over two and a half years ago after the corruption scandal that toppled his predecessor, Frenchman Michel Platini.
The row over FIFA's controversial plans for a new Club World Cup and global Nations League has intensified, after UEFA's president pulled no punches in a searing attack on the proposals in front of his counterpart.
"We will adapt the financial fair play rules to establish a new European balance in which everyone can find their rightful place".
Ceferin promised an overhaul of club competitions and confirmed there would be no breakaway Super League while he was in charge.
"By respecting the football pyramid, by respecting our sport's institutions and history, by respecting the principle of competitions that are open to everyone, without exception, by respecting the promotion and relegation system that lies at the heart of our sporting culture.you remain great clubs in the world's eyes".
Ceferin says letters UEFA received from former lawmakers and NGOs in Ukraine were "without any concrete proof" or evidence of ongoing court proceedings.
The other teams that are in the last 16 of the Champions League include Ajax, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City, Manchester United, Porto, Real Madrid and Tottenham.
"Not only because of the record (of PSG) in terms of Financial Fair Play, but also because (Al-Khelaifi) is president of beIN Sports, one of the main holders of television rights of UEFA", added the president of La Liga.
