Grammys 2019: How to watch the ceremony for free

Report: Drake, Kendrick Lamar, And Childish Gambino Declined Grammys Performances

Kendrick Lamar Drake Childish turn down 2019 grammy performances

On Sunday, 15-time Grammy victor Alicia Keys will emcee music's biggest night, while Cardi B, Camila Cabello, and Shawn Mendes take the stage. The article points out the hip-hop community's lack of representation and acknowledgement in the major song and album categories throughout the years.

"This is going to be a special Grammys". Despite being nominated for multiple awards, all three acts declined the opportunity to perform.

But as with many awards shows, the most entertaining, unpredictable moments are likely to happen before the festivities begin, on the red carpet.

Drake, Lamar, and Gambino's refusal to perform on Sunday is understandable given the Grammys' historically tumultuous relationship with hip-hop.

Additionally, current nominee Dua Lipa will perform with St. Vincent.

"What I plan to do is let every woman who is nominated, who is here this weekend, know that from the red carpet to the stage, win or lose, I have your back".

"There's great respect that is deserved to women and you will see that live embodied on Sunday".

This year's nominees mark a departure from the 2018 Grammys, where Recording Academy CEO Neil Portnow was criticized when he said women need to "step up" when asked about the lack of women in the top categories.

Ironically, in their quest to preserve some fabled bastion of old, white credibility, the Grammys have alienated numerous artists who are redefining the future of popular music, critically and commercially. Despite being heavily advertised as part of the show, Grande is not performing nor even attending the Sunday ceremony, after she felt producers "insulted" her by asserting too much control over her song choices.

Grande responded to the statements on Twitter saying, "I've kept my mouth shut but now you're lying about me".

It's a far stretch from last year's Grammys, where Lorde was the only women nominated for album of the year and only two women won prizes during the live telecast. "I hope the show is exactly what you want it to be and more". The nominations are dominated by Drake and Kendrick Lamar, with eight and seven nods, respectively. Yolanda Adams, Fantasia and Andra Day will honor the late Aretha Franklin with a performance.

Musgraves, also nominated for best country album, song and performance, said she's been trying to relax this week ahead of the show. Other performers scheduled for the evening are Cardi B, Brandi Carlile, Dan + Shay, H.E.R., Post Malone, Shawn Mendes, Janelle Monáe, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Chloe x Halle, Travis Scott and Miley Cyrus.
