Best new artist Alessia Cara was the only woman to receive her own award during the telecast, and Lorde, the sole woman to earn an album of the year nomination, was not invited to perform her own music. This year, 15 women are nominated in the big four categories, including Gaga, Chloe x Halle, Carlile, Janelle Monae, and Cardi B.
R&B singer Alicia Keys hosts a female-flavored Grammy Awards show on Sunday featuring performances by Cardi B, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Diana Ross and Dolly Parton, but which risks being overshadowed by the absence of some of music's most influential stars.
The three-and-a-half hour extravaganza will feature performances from nominees Chloe X Halle, Grammy-winner Lady Gaga (choosing this over the Bafta film awards), fellow victor Mark Ronson and Grammy nominee Travis Scott fresh off his performance at Super Bowl LIII.
Brandi Carlile, the folk singer nominated for six Grammys including album, song and record of the year, looked to Monae and said: "Girl, I would vote you into presidency". Kendrick Lamar leads with eight nominations, followed by Drake with seven and Brandi Carlile with six.

Ariana Grande also won her first Grammy in the same week that she publicly blasted Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich and accused him of lying about why she was no longer performing at the show.
When asked about the lack of women in the top categories at the 2018 Grammys, Recording Academy CEO Neil Portnow said women need to "step up". "Thank you @RecordingAcad #Grammys #Grammy and my co-writers and Bradley I love you so much thank you", the pop star wrote Sunday night before the show.
