Pastor Lacette Cross speaks during a protest calling for Governor Ralph Northam to resign on Monday
He denies having been in a racist photograph on his page in his 1984 medical school yearbook. Northam initially said he was in the photo, then denied it the next day, while acknowledging that he did wear blackface to a dance party that same year.
Northam told the Washington Post he's asked his cabinet secretaries to come up with specific proposals to begin addressing issues of inequality, such as expanding access to health care, housing and transportation, and to begin reporting those suggestions on Monday. Fairfax has maintained the allegations against him are not true.
Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam called Black Americans who were forcefully enslaved "indentured servants" and Gayle King had to correct him. "And that's why I'm not going anywhere". "I have learned from this, I have a lot more to learn, but we're in a unique opportunity now". "We're in a position to really stop talking so much and now to take action with policy to address a lot of these inequities".
Fairfax appears the mostly likely to lose his job, however.
And as the scandal in Virginia continues to boil, she told CBS's Face the Nation that she also expects the state's No 2, Democratic lieutenant governor Justin Fairfax, will "do the right thing for Virginia and resign", citing "extremely credible" allegations of sexual assault made against him last week by two women. Tim Kaine and almost the state's entire Democratic congressional delegation, among others.
"Almost half of Virginians. say Northam should step down, while the same percentage said he should remain in office", the Hill reports.
Del. Patrick Hope promised Friday to initiate impeachment articles if Fairfax didn't resign by Monday. Fairfax has vehemently denied the claims and called for authorities, including the FBI, to investigate.
"Frankly, we really want any entity with comprehensive investigative power to thoroughly look into these accusations", Fairfax spokeswoman Lauren Burke said.
On Friday, a second woman, Meredith Watson, accused Fairfax of raping her while they were students at Duke in 2000.
President Donald Trump has weighed in on the controversy with several tweets.
"That has served as an unfortunate lesson now for politicians who are in office".
"Did you not know that you were born into white privilege?"
And according to Dagnes, the increasingly tumultuous news cycle may help politicians endure scandal until the public loses interest - but it doesn't help resolve the painful questions those scandals have raised.
When asked if he had black friends growing up, Northam said he attended unsegregated schools since sixth grade.
"Every now and again, we slip up, we fall, and we have a responsibility to dust ourselves off and seek for full healing and reconciliation - but reconciliation that is based upon the one who has been offended, not the offender", Howard explains.
Even so, a poll conducted February 6-8 for the Washington Post found residents split over Northam's fate, with 47 percent wanting him to step down and an equal number saying he should stay on. "The more I know, the more I can do".
