Trump supporters form human wall at southern border

El Paso has historically been one of the safest cities in the U.S. City leaders often cite the city's low crime rate using Federal Bureau of Investigation tracking data to underscore how it has long ranked among the safest urban areas of its size, even before the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks that prompted the Bush administration to begin adding more fencing along the border in 2007.

After a 35-day partial government shutdown that ended January 25, the federal government could close again if congressional Republicans and Democrats cannot hammer out a compromise.

Dozens of people linked hands and formed a human wall to demonstrate in favor of the construction of the border wall between the United States and Mexico, at the border between Sunland Park, New Mexico on February 9, 2019.

In spite of the President's appearance, failed Senate candidate Beto O'Rourke plans on spoiling the fun by holding a protest march outside the venue of the MAGA rally. So far, O'Rourke has not made a decision.

O'Rourke is due to take part in the "March for Truth: Stop the Wall, Stop the Lies" event that will pass close to Trump's venue at the El Paso County Coliseum.

During his State of the Union address Trump highlighted El Paso as a positive example of what border barriers could achieve.

"Now, with a powerful barrier in place, El Paso is one of our safest cities", Trump said.

"The border city of El Paso, Texas, used to have extremely high rates of violent crime-one of the highest in the county, and considered one of our nation's most risky cities", Trump said.

The statements have been widely rejected by city officials.

In her penned letter to the White House, Escobar asked the president to apologize to the residents of the city for the comments.

"We are here to bring attention to the fact that there isn't a wall here", he said. It is NOT the sole deterrent.
