British Defense Chief Urges Bolstering Military Post-Brexit, Warns Russia Of 'Costs'

"A post-Brexit global Britain must be about taking action alongside our friends and allies and action to oppose those who flout worldwide law".

British Defence Minister Gavin Williamson speaks during a news conference onboard a Ukrainian Navy frigate, Getman Sagaidachny, in Odessa, Ukraine December 21, 2018.

He will also say that boundaries between peace and war are getting "blurred", and that Britain and its allies should be prepared "to use hard power to support our interests".

"And with the world changing so rapidly, it is up to us to seize the opportunity that Brexit brings", he will note. "A moment when we must strengthen our global presence, enhance our lethality, and increase our mass", Williamson will say. Opponents describe it as a blow both to Britain's influence and to the West as a whole.

In a speech to the Royal United Services Institute think tank here on Monday, Williamson said the 65,000-tonne carrier Queen Elizabeth - which was commissioned in 2017 - would also make appearances in the Mediterranean and the Middle East along the way, reports CNN.

China has laid claim to most of the South China Sea, which is used by several countries, including the US, as an important shipping lane. "And, a nation that people can turn to when the world needs leadership", Williamson will say. Nevertheless, the armed forces face a long-term budget shortfall estimated by a parliamentary committee to reach 15 billion pounds over the next decade.

"The alliance also must develop its ability to handle the kind of provocations that Russian Federation is throwing at us", he said.

Gavin Williamson is delivering the remarks in a speech in London on February 11.

â€To talk but fail to act risks our nation being seen as little more than a paper tiger, ” he will say.

Williamson added that North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries should step up and pay their 2 percent share of spending, while European countries must "not be distracted by the notion of an EU army".

The UK needs to strengthen its "lethality" and must be ready to "use hard power" to uphold it interests against nations like Russian Federation and China, Secretary of State for Defense Gavin Williamson said on Monday.
