Gervonta Davis retains WBA super-featherweight title with first-round knockout of Hugo Ruiz

Gervonta Davis knocks our Hugo Ruiz in first round to retain title

Premier Boxing Champions hosts an action filled night of boxing in Carson, California with a WBA super featherweight main event featuring undefeated knockout artist Gervonta "Tank" Davis facing defending his belt against former world champion Hugo Ruiz. It was a 12th straight win by knockout for the American.

"Tank" Davis, who was supposed to fight Abner Mares, but Mares was forced to pull out due to an issue with his eye, saw late-notice foe, Hugo Ruiz, timid to exchange and when he did it appeared from ringside a right hook, broke or badly injured Ruiz's nose.

Davis beat Ruiz by first-round technical knockout after dropping the Mexican veteran with a right cross.

The kickboxing star is set for another crack at boxing as Mayweather revealed he will take Davis over to Japan in April to compete in an exhibition bout against Nasukawa. He's fighting Tenshin in an exhibition match in Japan, on RIZIN.

"We're talking about May, if that's okay with him", said Mayweather. "So first it's Tenshin in April and then in May it's the real fight", Mayweather said.

The Baltimore native missed weight for this fight by 2oz having done the same in two of his previous bouts, one of which prompted the IBF to strip him of his junior lightweight title in 2017.

The fight itself was half the story as the over 8,000 people in attendance, mostly came for Davis whether to cheer or boo, they were invested in his fight.

Davis, who has now stopped his last 12 opponents, connected on 50 percent of his power punches, just under the 51 percent power accuracy he logged in his last four fights. I'm very confident that I will be more active this year.

After the fight, Davis said he wanted to get more rounds in, but knew with a quick victory, he would be able to return to the ring sooner.
