Jennifer Lopez's Motown tribute was a Grammys 2019 low point

One commenter on Twitter complained, "Jennifer Lopez is doing the Motown tribute and when Janelle Monae is right there and I just don't understand the creative decision".

But for anyone who'd been following along online over the last week, the tribute was indisputably controversial; Lopez came under fire after she was announced as the headliner for the tribute a few days earlier. Some especially took issue with the Recording Academy, which is responsible for producing the show, not using the many Black women vocalists in the industry to headline the tribute.

Lopez performed "Please Mr. Postman" while wearing a black ensemble with white feathers and accompanied by a group of dancers. "Any type of music can inspire any type of artist", the Bronx-born singer told ET. "Any type of music can inspire any type of artist", she told the publication. "You can't tell people what to love", Lopez said. "You gotta do what's in your heart", Lopez shared in her defense. "How do you do a Motown tribute without an ALL BLACK cast of artists?!" another person wondered, adding, "And it's Black History Month too".

Lalah Hathaway's whole body and self was sitting in the audience during a soulless Motown tribute. But you know, I want to dedicate this performance to my mom because this is the music we listened to in our living room.

Previously, he had said that he thinks "anyone who is upset is stupid". After all, it's Motown's 60th anniversary. According to Us Weekly, viewers watching the awards show from the comfort of their homes were shown a close-up of Rodriguez appearing stunned during Lopez's performance. "Motown was music for everybody".

"On the very first day of Motown Berry Gordy told the five of us who were present, 'I'm gonna start my own record company and we're gonna make music for everybody and always be sure to make quality music that the world can enjoy.' And through the Grace of God and hard work and determination, we accomplished that", Robinson continued.
