Verstappen 'smiling' after testing new Red Bull vehicle

13 February 2019, 11:24 | Anna Jefferson

Red Bull, meanwhile, enters 2019 with a tweaked driver line-up, having drafted in long-term junior and 2018 Toro Rosso racer Pierre Gasly in place of Renault-bound Daniel Ricciardo.

Red Bull's RB15 is the successor to a RB14 auto which finished last season battling for victories, with Verstappen, who won twice in 2018, widely tipped to challenge multiple champions Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel.

Lewis Hamilton's rival Max Verstappen has joined him on track at Silverstone as Red Bull unveiled the machine they hope will topple Mercedes' dominance.

"It was a very positive day so I'm happy", said Verstappen after the car's debut run.

Red Bull has offered the first glimpse of its 2019 F1 auto, the RB15, in an eye-catching one-off livery.

Toro Rosso finished ninth of 10 teams previous year with the Honda engine but Red Bull has sounded optimistic about the progress made by the Japanese manufacturer.

The 2019 Red Bull vehicle is the first to be made since the former world champions formed a partnership with new power providers Honda. "And from there onwards, you just start to work together with the vehicle [to see] what you can improve". "The first time was in Super Formula, so I went to Japan a lot, spent time in the country to learn the culture, to learn the way they communicate, the way they work and it's really different than what we have in Europe so you really need to adapt yourself to the culture and understand how things work there if you want to extract the best from the people".

"We are expecting a lot from Honda and are positive, but it will not be ideal from race one".

Red Bull's new auto was unveiled on the same day as defending champions Mercedes, who the team will hope they can wrestle both championships off in the upcoming season. But after that, we need to give them time as well. For sure there will be moments where as a team we'll make mistakes or it's maybe not going as we want it to.
