Italy bans unvaccinated kids from school

Children between 6 and 16 can not be flat-out banned from attending school, but parents will face fines up to $560 for sending their unvaccinated kids to class.

Italian children have been ordered not to attend school unless they prove they have been appropriately vaccinated.

The two parties that make up Italy's government - The League and the Five Star Movement - had criticised the policy of compulsory vaccinations, both before and after they came to power last summer.

Children under 6 years old will be banned from attending nursery and kindergarten if parents can not provide proof of vaccination.

Under the country's so-called Lorenzin law - named after the former health minister who introduced it - children will now be required to receive a range of immunizations in order to attend school.

"Italy's measles vaccine coverage was par with Namibia, lower than Ghana", commented Roberto Burioni, a professor of microbiology and virology at San Raffaele University in Milan.

"No vaccine, no school", she said of the new rules.

According to the BBC, the 10 vaccines include those that immunize against chickenpox, polio, measles, mumps, and rubella.

In Bologna, 300 children were suspended from school, according to Italian media reports, while 37 were turned away in the northern Veneto region.

"No vaccine, no school", health minister Giulia Grillo said, per the BBC.

Across the world, health authorities are grappling with a global resurgence of measles, with record numbers recorded in Europe and deadly outbreaks in the Philippines and Madagascar.
