Kyle Busch completes weekend swept in Arizona desert
14 March 2019, 09:11 | Anna Jefferson
Kyle Busch has won the NASCAR Cup Series race at ISM Raceway, tracking down Ryan Blaney over a long green-flag run and passing for the lead with 16 laps to go to complete a weekend sweep near Phoenix.
Busch will look to hit the 200 career wins mark next week at California when he runs in both the Xfinity and Cup races.
It was the second stage win of the season for Blaney, who is trying to give Team Penske its third straight victory in the series. Martin Truex, Jr. was the runner-up, followed by Ryan Blaney.
Pole-sitter Blaney started from the pole and led 46 of the first 75 laps to win Stage 1.
"It's not for me to worry about", Busch said of hitting 200 wins. "For myself and the career that I've had, I've been fortunate to be around a lot of top people and a lot of great sponsors".
Aric Almirola was fourth and Denny Hamlin was fifth, his auto also performing better on long green-flag runs.
Truex won last year’s race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana California
"This makes last weekend feel so much stupider", he said.
Seven-time series champion Jimmie Johnson is among those starting midway through the field, while Daniel Suarez and Michael McDowell are near the back after their qualifying fight Friday.
Despite the success, Busch remains adamant that he still has more to prove, going out to even set himself a lofty goal of getting to 100 Cup wins before he retires.
Nine-time Phoenix victor Kevin Harvick finished ninth. "I was just trying to do everything I could to get it shut off, and yeah, really unfortunate for us today".
Kyle Busch had to back off the throttle in the late stages at Phoenix Raceway on Sunday, but he had just enough fuel to grab his first victory of 2019.
Driver Kyle Busch makes a pit stop on lap 153 during the NASCAR Cup Series auto race at ISM Raceway, Sunday, March 10, 2019, in Avondale, Ariz. He may well accomplish that feat as early as next week, when he will again be racing in both the NASCAR Cup Series and Xfinity races.
