A familiar site around the world right now
While users can still open both platforms with some services appearing to have been restored, others are reporting issues with sending messages on Messenger, posting on Facebook and accessing other features on Instagram, as well as WhatsApp.
According to DownDetector, users all around the world are now experiencing problems with the platforms.
It's not just Facebook and Instagram that are down for the count, the social network's ads also are offline.
"We're aware that some people are now having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps".
The length of time, plus number of users affected, makes this comfortably the most severe outage in Facebook's history.
As expected, dedicated Facebook users who were struggling to get their meme fix, started freaking out at a level on par with the outage itself.
That's a reference to a distributed denial-of-service brute-force attack, in which networks are overloaded with bogus traffic created to disrupt service.
Rumours posted on other social networks, claimed the outage was as a result of a Distributed Denial of Service attack, known as DDoS - a type of cyber-attack that involves flooding a target service with extremely high volumes of traffic.
The world's tech giant Facebook Inc. acknowledged Wednesday that it has suffered an outage, affecting users around the globe, with the cause unidentified. Many people went on Twitter to vent their frustration.
On its developer site, Facebook said: "We are now experiencing issues that may cause some API requests to take longer or fail unexpectedly".
"Facebook for personal use is fine - but what happens when we rely on large companies such as this to provide business services?" she said.
The outages appear to be concentrated around the USA and Europe, as well as eastern Australia.
"We're working on getting it fixed as soon as we can", a message told many users as they tried to post content. Some users have regular access, and some have intermittent access.
