Congress has released its second list of candidates for the Lok Sabha Election 2019.

The Congress has chose to field Nana Patole, former BJP MP who quit the party in 2018 protesting against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's style of functioning, against Gadkari from the Nagpur constituency. The party's list for Maharashtra has Priya Dutt from Mumbai North Central, Murli Deora from Mumbai South and Nana Patole from Nagpur. Mr Babbar will contest from Moradabad. Despite the JDS winning only 38 seats in comparison to Congress' 80 seats, the latter had offered the post of chief minister to HD Kumaraswamy. The bureaucrat retired in 2014 as the Director General of the Academy of Administration and Management.

Having declared 16 candidates from Uttar Pradesh in its second list, the Congress has now named 27 candidates from the politically crucial state till now. Thakurdwara is part of the Lok Sabha constituency. BJP rebel Savitri Bai Phule would be contesting from Bahraich, the seat she won in 2014.

BSP chief Mayawati on Tuesday categorically told her party workers that "there would be no alliance with Congress in any state and in any form", thereby putting an end to speculations of a last-minute understanding with Congress. Mayawati has been clear about BSP's stand on not including Congress in UP alliance from the start. Mr Tripathi was a Congress legislator since 2012, who lost the 2017 assembly election in which the BJP had a resounding victory.

Madhu is the son of former Chief Minister S Bangarappa and is likely to be pitted against another former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa's son and sitting BJP MP B Y Raghavendra. For most of the last 20 years, the Mirzapur seat has been held by Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party and Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party, which have joined hands for the coming elections.

"Earlier, he has said the Congress will fight the general election in Uttar Pradesh on its own strength, arguing that the path of his party may be different from that of the SP and the BSP but their objective is the same".
