NASA's new rocket won't be ready for moon shot next year

"We have unbelievable capability that exists right now that we can use off the shelf in order to accomplish this objective", Bridenstine said. The most recent class of flight directors was also 50% women, NASA said.

Nasa administrator - Jim Bridenstine - was a guest on a United States science and technology radio show Science Friday, when he made the comment.

The head of NASA may not know who the first person to set foot on the red planet will be, but he believes that person will "likely" be a woman.

Bridenstine went out of his way to say NASA was not abandoning the rocket, praising it as "the largest rocket that's ever been built in American history" and saying it remains "a critical capability" for the USA space program.

Bridenstine dedicated a lot of discussion to the Gateway, also called the Lunar Orbital Platform-Gateway (and formerly the Deep Space Gateway), which is a proposed moon-orbiting outpost that would serve as a waystation to the lunar surface and as a research station.

"NASA is committed to making sure that we have a broad and diverse set of talent", he said. We have the first all-female spacewalk happening this month at the end of March, which is of course, National Women's Month. Today, women comprise 34% of active NASA astronauts, according to the agency. We feel lucky that it [the all-female spacewalk] just sort of happened to be in Women's History Month'. While NASA is optimistic about the budget, it spells significant delays and terminations for a number of the agency's projects, including the development of a new Space Launch System.

NASA is now studying whether to send its first Orion crew capsule and first European Service Module into space on a big commercial rocket, "launch a second heavy-lift rocket to put an upper stage into orbit around the Earth and then dock those two together to throw around the moon the Orion crew capsule with the European Space Module", Bridenstine said. LAMP measures the layer of molecules found on the Moon's surface to see the changes that transpired through time.

'We will use what we learn as we move forward to the Moon to take the next giant leap - sending astronauts to Mars'.

This first mission coming up - essentially a three-week test flight - would carry no crew and would not land.

The Space Launch System was supposed to launch the Orion spacecraft in an uncrewed mission in orbit the moon no later than June 2020.
