Iwao, a computer scientist and software engineer whose official title is cloud developer advocate, used y-cruncher, a program created by USA software developer Alexander J. Yee that has been used in many previous pi record breakings.
A Google employee from Japan calculated the most accurate value of pi at 31 trillion digits and shattered the world record, the company announced in a blog post on Thursday, or "Pi Day".
To calculate the number, Iwao used an application called y-cruncher on 25 Google Cloud virtual machines.
Pi has been computed to 31.4 trillion decimal places or 31,415,926,535,897 digits to be exact, using Google Compute Engine, powered by Google Cloud. It's an irrational number that continues infinitely without repetition. It's the number you get when you divide a circle's circumference by its diameter.
Iwao's calculation set a new Guinness World Record. Trueb also used y-cruncher to calculate Pi value, but Google set new records for using the cloud and SSD drives as well. No word yet on whether she will be celebrating her achievement the American way - by eating actual pie.
