Telegram gains 3 million new users in 24 hours during Facebook outage

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp suffered a global outage. What happened?

Facebook Blames'Server Configuration Change for Massive Outage

The company blamed a change it had made to its system for the outage.

"We're very sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate everyone's patience", Facebook said.

Earlier on Thursday, the outage-tracking service DownDetector showed significantly fewer people having issues accessing Facebook and Instagram compared to Wednesday, when the outage began. The company's flagship social network has more than 2.3 billion users, and Instagram has more than 1 billion.

This is clearly not a coincidence even if Durov did not explicitly refer to Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

In Washington, campaigners who have long called for the break-up of Facebook said the outage showed how the concentration of ownership of tech platforms is "dangerous" for consumers.

On Wednesday, Facebook dispelled speculation that the outage was caused by a denial-of-service attack (DDoS), a type of cyberattack that disrupts an online service by flooding it with requests. The largest outages for Instagram were reported in the greater NY area and around Los Angeles and Toronto, according to the Downdetector.com outage map.

While Facebook said it has "resolved its issues", the update was sparse on details.

The outage came the same day that The New York Times reported that federal prosecutors are conducting a criminal investigation into Facebook's data deals with 150 companies, including Sony, Netflix, Spotify and Amazon.

Facebook is facing a slew of lawsuits and regulatory inquiries over its privacy practices, including ongoing investigations by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, the Securities and Exchange Commission and two state agencies in NY. And Spotify and Netflix reportedly were allowed to see user private message information.
