Sanders Campaign Spox Apologizes For Facebook Post About Jews' 'Dual Allegiance'

Top Sanders aide invokes nasty anti-Semitic smear on social media — and now she's backtracking

Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign has apologized for comments online questioning whether American Jews held a "dual allegiance" with Israel.

"In a conversation on Facebook, I used some language that I see now was insensitive".

"Our community is exasperated by Rep. Omar's unfulfilled promises to listen and learn from Jewish constituents while seemingly simultaneously finding another opportunity to make an anti-Semitic remark and insult our community", the head of a major Jewish group in Minnesota - who was among the Jewish leaders who met with Omar to help her understand why her "dual loyalty" comments were hurtful, inappropriate, and downright scandalous, told The Hill.

Ilhan Omar is supposed to be in a fairly safe district having secured around 75% of the vote in her last go-round, but if some Minnesota Democrats have their way, she may be facing a significant primary challenge.

Sisa deleted the comment after she was first approached by a Politico reporter, according to that outlet.

"I want to talk about the political influence in this country that says it is OK for people to push for allegiance to a foreign country", she said.

Omar has provoked accusations of anti-Semitism against her with her chiding of Israel, suggesting at one point that it had "hypnotized the world" and prayed that Allah would "awaken" it.

Since being sworn in in January, Omar has accused some of her fellow lawmakers of dual loyalty, or "allegiance to a foreign country", due to their support for Israel.

Democratic Party officials interviewed by The Hill said they have not yet decided on an alternative candidate, but "frustrations are mounting". Rather than come to Omar's defense, her Democratic colleagues in the House drafted a resolution to condemn anti-Semitism and all other forms of hate.

The House made a decision to vote on a resolution last week to condemn anti-Semitism in response to Omar's comments. But Hunegs said Omar didn't care.

Omar is one of the first two female Muslim House members, along with Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib, and has been the target of Islamophobic and racist attacks.
