Google Releases Android Q Beta for Developers, Early Adopters

Android Q will bring native support for foldable phones

Android Q beta is now available for developers and brave Pixel users

Google has released the first beta edition of the Android Q for all the Pixel phones that have launched so far such as Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 3, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 2, Pixel XL and Pixel.

Included in the Android Q upgrade are improved security and privacy features which include being able to limit access to your location especially when they are not in use.

In other permission related changes, the Access Storage permission has now been split to individual folders that includes Photos, Videos, Audio and Downloads. There's no mention of this change in the current Android Q release notes, so we could see it show up in a later version of the OS. It works quite well (on the Pixel 3 XL and not the Pixel 2) but you can now have "only" a single freeform window open on your homescreen.

Android is finally getting more granular control over how an app can use location information. All apps accessing Downloads must make use of the system file picker as well.

There are several other changes, including better support for sharing between applications, improved MIDI support, tighter integration with the Vulcan graphics API, faster application launching and more.

Google has introduced us to its latest flavor of Android, which will be known as Android Q until the tech giant picks a dessert starting with the said letter. More details in may this year Google has released Android Q Beta 1 for developers to test the new APIs and give feedback before the Google IO 2019 developer's conference.

Google's Android Pie already lets users change the shape of their icons by default on Stock Android and ROMs which are close to it.

Now, as always, while OEMs add the broads strokes of Google's new features to their Android updates, some features may vanish or be altered beyond recognition.

The major barrier to testing the new version of Android is having the right phone in the first place. Android Q is also adding "experimental support" for ANGLE on top of Vulkan, which is "a graphics abstraction layer designed for high-performance OpenGL compatibility across implementations".
