James Gunn is back on board Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Sthanlee Mirador/Sipa USA/NewscomJames Gunn will return to direct the third film of Marvel'sGuardians of the Galaxy franchise, multiple outlets are reporting.
The same is likely true amongst GoTG and MCU fans, many of whom have been angry about Gunn's dismissal, circulating petitions and making further efforts in his defense. In the interim, Gunn signed on to reboot the Suicide Squad franchise for Warner Bros and Deadline confirms that Disney will allow him to honour that agreement before commencing work again on Guardians 3. As reported, Marvel has agreed to start the production on Guardians of the Galaxy 3 after Gunn finishes Suicide Squad. Now, Gunn has been hired back to direct.
In July of 2018, a number of tweets dating back to 2009 in which Gunn joked about pedophilia, homophobia, rape, and September 11 resurfaced and Disney quickly severed ties with him.
Gunn's old tweets, which were dug up by critics online, included lines like, "I like when little boys touch me in my silly place". If you'll recall, Gunn was forced to vacate his seat when Internet hounds discovered a bunch of controversial Tweets assigned to his name. According to Friday's Deadline report, Horn was swayed by those meetings - and Gunn's public apology - to re-hire the writer/director.
"It's not to say I'm better, but I am very, very different than I was a few years ago; today I try to root my work in love and connection and less in anger. My days saying something just because it's shocking and trying to get a reaction are over".
The first two installments grossed over US$1.6 billion worldwide and in a rare occurrence, the second movie made more than the first.
The "Guardians" cast released an open letter later that month in full support of Gunn and the movie's star, Chris Pratt, personally said he'd "love to see him reinstated as director of Volume 3".
